First Step Recognizes Outstanding Volunteer!

Barb Kukla has been a volunteer at First Step for almost three years. During that time, Barb has held art therapy sessions at First Step twice a week for individuals involved in domestic violence. As a trained and registered art therapist Barb has insights into human behavior that she brings to the surface through art as an alternative medium. In addition to being a trained art therapist Barb is also a nun, a combination that helps to infuse her work with a sense of service. The art therapy program at First Step is designed to provide any person involved in domestic violence or family conflict with the opportunity to express themselves in a manner that they might not normally be able to. Channeling their feelings into art helps to constructively bring out their thoughts, as well as uncovering things that could otherwise remain buried in the subconscious. Barb’s technique is to follow the lead of each person and facilitate an environment where they feel comfortable enough to express themselves. Clients need not have any previous art training or appreciation. The art is meant to act as a vessel for sincere expression. In the time that she has been at First Step numerous women and children have benefited from her therapy and been given a unique opportunity to constructively come to terms with their emotions and various situations. In addition to her work with art therapy, Barb also works with First Step staff in recommending client services, implementing case plans, and ministering to clients in need. Because of her dedication and attitude, Barb is a tremendous asset to First Step as an agency, and also to our clients as they are encouraged to make healthy choices. It is our privilege to have Barb Kukla work along side us in the vital work of strengthening families in our community.
