Our Philosophy |

First Step is committed to the principle that no one deserves to be physically, emotionally, psychologically, or sexually abused. And, we are equally committed to the belief that domestic violence will not come to an end until society accepts the fact that it is the responsibility of both partners in a relationship to take appropriate steps to stop abuse from continuing. Our philosophy teaches us that safety is the first priority in dealing with family violence, and that when reconciliation is an option it must be carried out with careful deliberation and always keep in mind the effect of conflict on children. Based on our experience, we know that the issue of domestic violence is a complicated and dynamic problem. In order to provide practical solutions, we as service providers must approach our clients with discernment, an open mind, and above all, compassion. First Step's Mission: "To provide resources that empower individuals and families to make healthy relationship choices." First Step's Vision: "For every home in our community to be a happy and healthy home that is nurturing of children and their development. It is our vision to encourage our clients to grow and discover within themselves the qualities of compassion, hope, strength, and respect." First Step has five basic tenets to its philosophy:
