First Step Family Violence Intervention Center

Take Your First Step...

Our History

For over 25 years First Step has been serving the local community, specifically in the Wood, Wyandot, Sandusky, and Seneca counties. Started in the early 1980s as a result of a grassroots movement of citizens concerned about the problem of domestic violence, First Step strives to provide resources that empower individuals and families to make healthy choices. We have a long and successful record of service to a wide range of clients

Our Philosophy

First Step is committed to the principle that no one deserves to be physically, emotionally, psychologically, or sexually abused. And, we are equally committed to the belief that domestic violence will not come to an end until society accepts the fact that it is the responsibility of both partners in a relationship to take appropriate steps to stop abuse from continuing. Our philosophy teaches us that safety is the first priority in dealing with family violence, and that when reconciliation is an option it must be carried out with careful deliberation and always keep in mind the effect of conflict on children. Based on our experience, we know that the issue of domestic violence is a complicated and dynamic problem. In order to provide practical solutions, we as service providers must approach our clients with discernment, an open mind, and above all, compassion.

First Step's Mission:

"To provide resources that empower individuals and families to make healthy relationship choices."

First Step's Vision:

"For every home in our community to be a happy and healthy home that is nurturing of children and their development. It is our vision to encourage our clients to grow and discover within themselves the qualities of compassion, hope, strength, and respect."

First Step has five basic tenets to its philosophy:

  • By design each individual is unique. It is the responsibility of each individual to actualize their own potential without infringing upon another person's ability to do the same.
  • Each individual has the power to choose their own actions and beliefs. The outcomes of these choices are the individual's responsibility.
  • Ultimately, the individual choices affect society as a whole
  • Reconnection to higher values is essential to the human growth process. The recognition of these values serves as a catalyst for healing and recovery through empowered personal choices
  • A positive human experience occurs within an intricate web of healthy relationships.

First Step desires to create and maintain an environment for change that is:

  • Expressive and Creative
  • Solution and Strength Oriented
  • Collaborative
  • Understandable
