We have also embraced another task to fulfill our mission. Rather than only being available to react when domestic violence occurs, we believe we should be pro-active with efforts that can prevent even the first acts of domestic violence. Our "We Believe in Marriage" program is designed to be at the center of this task. We know that households that are built around a healthy marriage are actually the least likely to experience domestic violence. Children who are reared in these households also benefit in very significant ways throughout their lives. First Step does not counsel any person to remain in a dangerous relationship. Nor do we counsel anyone to leave a relationship. Individuals are left to make their own choices. We support each person in whatever choice that individual makes concerning leaving a relationship or remaining in a relationship. We also believe it is important to present a truthful message about marriage. If a positive message about marriage is "divorced" from domestic violence intervention, then people may believe that "marriage" is the problem that causes domestic violence. There is no way to support the idea that marriage is the problem. In fact, domestic violence is by far the least likely to occur within the context of a marriage. But if people believe marriage is the problem, then they may be more likely to make other relationship decisions, like cohabitation without marriage, which actually increase the likelihood that they will experience domestic violence. On the other hand, simply entering into marriage is not the magic solution to preventing domestic violence. It takes good relationship skills and an appropriate level of commitment to enjoy a healthy relationship and prevent domestic violence. Marriage just happens to be the institution that best models these characteristics and in which these characteristics can best be fostered. Our goal, then, is to present opportunities for improved relationship building, especially within the context of a healthy marriage. You Can Commemorate Milestone Marriages and Support First Step! Honor the marriage of your loved ones by making a donation to First Step in their name.
